Beginner's Guide to Formula E

Your GUIDE TO fORMULA e QUALIFYING

This is your visual guide to the current qualifying format for Formula E.

How does Formula E qualifying work?
Formula E uses a "knockout" Duels style qualifying format. Drivers are split into two groups based on their position in the championship, those in odd-numbered places go into group A, while those in even-numbered places go into group B. The exception is in the first race of the season, where each team can nominate one driver into each group.
Each group gets a 12-minute session, group A first, followed by group B. All laps must be driven at 300 kW maximum power level. Each Driver must set a minimum of one timed lap within the first 6 minutes of his respective Group; failure to accomplish this will be reported to the Stewards, who may impose a penalty. At the end of the “Groups”, the Drivers with the fastest four lap times of each Group will move to the “Duels”. Positions 5 to 12 of each Group will be defined according to the fastest lap times achieved.
The “Duels” will be comprised of Quarter-finals, Semi-finals and a Final. For the “Duels”, the maximum total power output shall be 350 kW. Quarter-final Duels will be ordered according to Drivers’ finishing positions in each group (A and B). The order of Quarter-final Duels and the Drivers’ order within each Duel will be defined based on the Drivers’ classification in the “Groups” as follows: A: 3A vs 2A B: 4A vs 1A C: 3B vs 2B D: 4B vs 1B
Semi-final Duels will be comprised of the winners of each Quarter-final Duel (A vs B and C vs D). The starting order shall be reverse order as defined by the lap times in Quarter-final. The Driver with the fastest time will be the last on track. In case of a dead heat, the Driver who obtains the time first will be considered the fastest.
The Final Duel will be comprised of the two winners of the Semi-final Duels. According to the times set in the Semifinal Duels, the order shall be reverse order as defined by the lap times. The Driver with the fastest time will be the last on track. In case of a dead heat, the Driver who obtains the time first will be considered the fastest. In the case of a dead heat, the Driver who has obtained the time first will be declared the winner.
The winning Driver of the Final Duel is qualified first and the loser second. According to the times achieved in the Semi-final Duels, losers are qualified third and fourth. According to the time obtained in the Quarter-final duels, losers are qualified between fifth and eighth. According to the positions achieved in each Group classification, Drivers who participated in the Group of the winning Driver of the Final Duel (positions 5 to 12) will be classified in the odd positions, and Drivers of the other Group (positions 5 to 12) will be classified in the even positions.
3 Championship Points will be awarded to the polesitter (winner of the final).
